In February 2009, it was widely reported that the Local Business Listing service provided by Google had been compromised. Apparently, individuals were hijacking local listings by masquerading as a local business, yet driving web traffic to another site altogether.

Since Google implemented the new “Places Near You” feature on Google’s local places pages (much to the chagrin of the SEO & Small Business community) I’ve noticed that Google local business listings are merging much like last year. Fortunately not to the same degree.
